This is the Italian’s version of pizza to eat on the go, and it has become extremely popular in the United States as well. Calzones are folded pizzas, resembling dumplings or turnovers stuffed with cheesy pizza goodness. Toppings and sauce are then added at the end! CalzoneĬalzones, though technically pizza, don’t look like your average slice. It typically forgoes mozzarella cheese and instead uses Wisconsin brick cheese that gets nice and crispy when baked on top of the dough, almost like a fried cheese. Detroit-style pizza has airier, lighter dough than its Sicilian descendent. Similar to Sicilian pizza, Detroit-style pizza is famously known for being baked in a square instead of a round, but there are a few key differences between the two. Since Chicago-style pizzas are so thick, they usually have a much longer bake time than other types of pizzas. Toppings are then assembled in a reverse order of a regular pizza-a layer of cheese goes in first, then a layer of meat and/or veggies and finally a hefty amount of sauce. It’s often baked in a round pan, more similar to a cake pan than a traditional pizza pan. Whoever invented it, all Chicagoans agree: deep-dish pizza is unique, delicious and New York’s biggest rival for “best pizza in America.” Chicago-style pizza is characterized by its doughy, thick crust. A popular report is that Chicago’s Pizzeria Uno was the first to serve it, though which chef to attribute the recipe to is also disputed. ![]() ![]() Chicago-Style PizzaĬhicago-style pizza, otherwise known as “deep-dish pizza” originated in the Windy City, though who can take credit for its invention is still unclear. Order a Sicilian-style pizza in America, and you’ll be served a square or rectangle, thick-crusted pizza with a lot of sauce and mozzarella cheese. The true Italian version of this pizza is topped with ingredients like anchovies, herbs, onions, tomatoes and a variety of Italian cheeses but it has evolved with its introduction to the United States. ![]() It’s traditionally a thick-crusted pizza served in a square shape, rather than a round. Sicilian pizza gets its name, as you may have guessed, from its city of origin: Sicily, Italy. One of the most popular ways to top Neapolitan pizza is margherita style-with tomatoes, slices of mozzarella cheese and fresh basil leaves. What you’re actually aiming for is a softer crust. Bake it for too long, and you’ll end up with charred edges. Neapolitan pizza, with origins in Naples, Italy, has an extremely thin crust that is baked at a high temperature, traditionally in a wood-fire oven, causing the sides of the crust to puff up and rise. Neapolitan PizzaĪs opposed to New York-style pizza, Neapolitan pizza is not meant to be consumed on the go-in fact, this type of pizza is best served with a fork and knife. It’s said that New York-style pizza is closest to the true Italian version of pizza the crust is traditionally hand-tossed and topped with a layer of sauce, mozzarella cheese and toppings. If you don’t return to your campsite or be seen as on your way out of the park, you will be considered as trespassing. Note: It is required that you are off the hiking trails and off the Mouse Tank Road at sunset. I do that first so I won’t have to worry about making it back here after a day of sightseeing and whatnot since the sun would’ve most likely set by then and 2) it’s always nice to talk to the people that work or volunteer for the park because they are knowledgeable! Sometimes they can even give you tips on where to find hidden gems. I usually start my ‘journey’ here because 1) I like to collect souvenirs from every park I visit. I stopped by the Visitor Center first, which is open daily from 9am to 4pm. I even took a side trip out towards Lake Mead and the town of Overton, more about that later. I started my day a little later so I really only had time to do one hike but I also spent a lot of time pulling out at random spots to take photos. The hikes within the park are all less than 2 miles long. If you only have one day to visit, you can easily hit up all the iconic spots in Valley of Fire State Park. There is also a separate area for folks with RVs and those sites are an additional $10/night because of extra utilities like hookups. Even if you do ‘forget’ to do this, the ranger will stop by in the normally and stick an envelop on your vehicle to make sure you pay the fee. If you don’t have cash with you, you would have to check in at the visitor center in order to pay with a card. This counted towards the campsite fee for the night. I wasn’t a resident of Nevada, so I paid $15 to get into the park. I wanted some privacy and some protection from the winds if there was going to be any, I opted for a campsite situated right next to the iconic red sandstones. ![]() Plenty of spots were available and most of them had red sandstones as a backdrop. By the time I rolled into Atlatl Campground, it was a little after 11am. Since they were both first-come, first-served, I wanted to get to the park relatively early. I read online that both campgrounds can fill up quickly even on the weekdays. I honestly would have preferred staying here instead if I had the chance to camp here again. I did drive to Arch Rock the next morning just to check it out. A flight of stairs take you to petroglyhs on the Atlatl Rock. I camped at Atlatl and this is where Atlatl Rock is located. Both campgrounds combined yield a total of 72 available sites. There are two campgrounds at Valley of Fire State Park and they are actually located in the same area. Source: Nevada State Parks and Travel Nevada The name ‘Valley of Fire’ derived from a AAA official traveling the road connecting Salt Lake City and Los Angeles as part of the Arrowhead Trail in 1920 and due to the red sandstones, the entire region looked like it was ‘on fire’ and hence the name. The park opened in 1934 and became Nevada’s first state park in 1935. The park was built by the Civilian Conversation Corps, building simple amenities such as campgrounds, stone cabins, trails and roads. In 1931, Valley of Fire State Park was created after a transfer of 8,760 acres of federal land to the state of Nevada. Thomas - this settlement was later flooded by the waters from Lake Mead during the Hoover Dam construction in the early 1930s. In the mid-1860s, Mormon missionaries settled St. Ancient petroglyphs were found carved into the red sandstone rock formations as seen around the park. Some 2,500 years ago, Ancestral Puebloans were living in and around the modern-day Moapa Valley (located about 13.8 miles / 20 minutes away). This means that the campaign is still the excellent experience that it was eighteen years ago. In this case, Blizzard seems to have adopted an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy in an extension of its effort to keep the original feel. The end result is that it takes up an unwieldy amount of the screen and looks silly plonked in the middle of an ultrawide monitor.įor better or for worse, the underlying gameplay of Warcraft 3 also remains largely the same. Whether it was to appease a subset of classic audience, or due to a lack of resources, we’ll probably never know. Though early previews of the game showed off a smaller, less obtrusive in-game interface, that was scrapped during development. The updated UI promised on Reforged‘s store page only extends to menu and resolution. Unfortunately, that also highlights how little the interface has changed between versions. If you don’t like it, there’s always a toggle to go back to classic graphics, which also switches back the in-game UI. ![]() Still, Blizzard billed a major graphical improvement and it’s clearly higher fidelity overall. Thanks to changes towards the end of the beta, the game is also very over-saturated – so much so that I had to tone down my monitor values while I played. On top of all this, animations feel just as clunky as the original, with a little smoothness and a feeling that characters are sort of gliding along the ground. The ground also lacks a feeling of depth, owing to the lack of strong ambient occlusion and shadowing. Units are much closer to the modern World of Warcraft style, while land and buildings are firmly rooted in the past. Environment textures are similar to classic, but sharper, which creates a little mismatch. Crates, for example, still feature muddy, low-quality textures. The major improvements that came to character models don’t seem to have extended to the rest of the game. Without the nostalgia goggles of childhood, this looks like a definite upgrade, but with that said, it’s also not as great as I was expecting. The character models move away from the single-digit polygons seen in the classic to detailed and expressive units whose main flaw is looking a bit plasticky at times. There’s an argument to be made about a slight loss of the original style, but from a pure fidelity standpoint, it’s hard to argue that Reforged is a downgrade. I was lucky enough to avoid all of the reported campaign bugs and performance/matchmaking issues, and haven’t run into a single one since. ![]() Its main menu has been given a new lick of paint and the support for modern resolutions is a huge plus. As a result, Blizzard’s willingness to return to its roots came as a pleasant surprise to many. Its custom game editor spawned the MOBA genre, which these days has far outstripped the humble real-time strategy game in market share, e-sports, and sheer popularity.
